About this event

How do Christians pray? Is it different when we are together or alone? Is liturgy simply an attempt to organise spirituality? These two principal aspects of the Christian life have sometimes been portrayed as lying at very opposite ends of a spectrum, with some people being drawn strongly to one and others instead to the other. This day intends to explore how on the contrary the two should relate to one another as complementary parts of any Christian’s identity.

Paul Bradshaw is Professor of Liturgy at the University of Notre Dame, a priest-vicar at Westminster Abbey, and a member of the Church of England Liturgical Commission. He has published extensively on the subject of Christian liturgy, having written or edited more than 20 major works, together with over 90 essays or articles in periodicals. His book, Two Ways of Praying, in particular investigated the connection between liturgy and spirituality.

Lucy Winkett is Canon Precentor of St Paul’s Cathedral, holding responsibility for the Liturgy and Music of the cathedral in its day to day running and in crafting special services. As a former professional singer and Associate of the Royal College of Music, with degrees in History and Theology, she is interested in the relationship between music and spirituality and is the author of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book for 2010, Our Sound is our Wound.
